Prepping to Study Abroad with Allergy
You got accepted into your dream study abroad program, but in the back of your mind, you’re concerned about going across the world with severe allergies. Allergies shouldn’t hold you back from living your best life, and with adequate preparation, it doesn’t have to.
Here are a few different ways to prepare and stay safe while on your dream trip.
Pack Appropriately
A lot of prep goes into a multi-month long trip, but especially when you have to account for allergies. These essentials should be taken along with you:
- Ensure your epinephrine (if prescribed) is up to date and packed
- Talk to your provider about receiving adequate amounts of prescriptions like inhalers and others that may be needed while away
- Bring more antihistamines, creams, and other symptom relievers than you think you may need
- If you have food allergies, bring a translated allergy card explaining your allergy for when ordering food
Make sure to pack these essentials in your carry-on bag just in case you need them while on the long-haul flight.
Establish Travel Health Insurance
Even with the most preparation, there’s always a chance you may need healthcare while away – whether it’s for allergies or something else. It’s a good idea to sign up for temporary international health insurance in case of emergency.
Find an emergency room near you and drop a pin in your map app so that you can find it quickly if you need to.
Continue Treatment

If you’re on another therapy and are worried about missing months of treatment, find a provider near you that offers allergy drop treatment and consider switching. Not only can you continue treatment while you’re away, but you can safely treat all your allergies at once. It’s safe, effective, and treats the total load of allergies. Learn more here!
