4 Things to Do Before Turning on The Heat: Allergy Edition

We’re about to spend a lot more time indoors, and while it can be a respite from outdoor allergies, there are still indoor allergens that cause symptoms during the cold months. Here are a few things to do before you turn on the heat to avoid dust mite, pet dander, and mold allergies this fall and winter.

Replace Filters

It’s time to look at the filters in your home and change them out for the season. If you’re not already using HEPA filters in your home, make the upgrade now to help eliminate symptoms. Unlike regular filters, HEPA filters trap even the tiniest particles, so that allergens are contained before they circulate through your home. You can use them in:

  • HVAC system
  • Air purifiers
  • Vacuums
  • Dehumidifiers

Use this as your reminder to change the filter, and upgrade to a HEPA filter if you haven’t already.

Clean Vents and Registers

Vents and registers collect dust mites, pet dander, mold spores, and even outdoor pollens throughout the year as air circulates through the home. Fall is a good time to clean those out and
reduce the amount of allergens present in your home during the winter months. For those highly allergic, wear protective gear like gloves and a mask while cleaning to help keep
symptoms at bay.

Check for Moisture

While you’re doing your cleaning and filter swaps, take a look at the areas of your home that are not frequently visited – like the basement or unused restrooms – and check for moisture. Any
accumulation can lead to mold, or already have hidden mold damage that can cause allergy symptoms. A combination of equal parts water and bleach can get rid of visible mold. Be sure to wear
protective gloves and a mask to avoid direct contact.

Dust Everywhere

Fans, baseboards, shelves, other places that get forgotten should all be dusted or vacuumed before your days are spent mostly indoors. Dust mites thrive in warm environments, so deep
cleaning soft furniture, blankets, curtains, and other household items in hot water can also be beneficial.

Treat the Cause

There is only so much prevention you can do – allergens will always be around, no matter how much you clean and prepare. For those continuously struggling through allergies, Allergychoices
recommends allergy drop treatment. It treats the cause of allergies by slowly and safely introducing the body to the allergens that cause symptoms. Over time, the dose is increased and the body learns to tolerate more and more of the offending allergens. The goal for environmental allergens is for patients to feel reduced symptoms, or be symptom-free, after successful treatment.
